Fires pose a significant risk to cultural heritage around the world. Although they may appear to be a 'rare event' from the perspective of an individual institution, major fires can become the order of the day when considering the entire heritage of a nation.

Moreover, their impact is usually catastrophic, resulting in the total or near-total loss of the cultural heritage concerned.
