THE CONDITION REPORT: WHO, HOW, WHEN AND WHY

by Cristina Resti and Luisa Mensi

The Condition Report is a document that assesses the condition of a work of art at a certain point in time; the most helpful way is to examine the work of art in detail and certify its condition in this related document.

In her latest article, Cristina Resti - Art expert and Art Network Manager at ARTE Generali: together with Luisa Mensi- Art conservation and restoration expert, prepared a compact set of guidelines on this fundamental tool.

The Condition Report is a useful document for insurance purposes, as it evaluates the different stages of the work during the loan period, identifying the moment when the damage occurred (damage is a physical harm that affects the value of an object/artwork) and the related responsibilities.

The Condition Report is not just a checklist – it’s a comprehensive document that speaks a common language for all the parties involved and that includes:

  • -Work details: author, title, dimensions, subject, technique
  • -Transport details (for loans)
  • -Damage assessment with graphical mapping
  • -Extensive photographs
  • -Date and signature for authenticity
