  • ARTE Generali expands cultural partnerships in Italy with Biennale Internazionale dell'Antiquariato di Firenze
  • Art insurer contributes knowledge from a number of research fields to protect cultural heritage from damages

Munich, July 12, 2022 - ARTE Generali, the Generali Group's global business unit for the protection of art works, will be the main sponsor of the 32nd Biennale Internazionale dell'Antiquariato di Firenze (BIAF) for the first time.

The Biennale Internazionale dell'Antiquariato di Firenze is considered one of the most important international events for Italian art. The biennial exhibition of antiques and art attracts thousands of visitors from all over the world to the capital of the Renaissance to see and trade art. The charm of the exhibition lies in using the city itself as an exhibition space with the centerpiece in Palazzo Corsini and a rich cultural program spread throughout the city of Florence.

AS A PARTNER OF THE INTERNATIONAL PROJECT CHARISMA, THE INFLUENCE OF CLIMATE CHANGE ON ARTWORKS IS RESEARCHED

In Venice and Florence, contemporary witnesses and survivors recall the disaster that struck northern and central Italy on November 4, 1966, resulting in the largest destruction of irreplaceable art treasures since World War II. Although many protective measures were put in place after this event, it will still be necessary to plan for future weather events caused by climate change.

ARTE Generali is therefore participating in an international research project to reduce the risk of climate change impact on cultural heritage, launched in spring 2022. The international Erasmus+ project CHARISMA (Cultural Heritage Academy for Risk Management), led by Mazzini Lab Società Benefit, aims to research risk factors to cultural heritage caused by climate change. The research collaboration brings together ARTE Generali with its insurance knowledge, the University of Perugia as well as the Austrian University for Continuing Education in Krems and the Institute of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (ITAM) in the Czech Republic. The results of the two-year project will provide a basis for risk assessment that will be valid far beyond the borders of the participating countries.

Italo Carli, Head of ARTE Generali Italy, says: "ARTE Generali is much more than an insurer. With new contemporary technologies and research on climate change, we see ourselves as pioneers in the insurance industry. The Biennale Internazionale dell'Antiquariato di Firenze exhibits unique antiques and art. As specialists we have a particular view on the protection of art and cultural heritage, because art is unique and cannot be replaced in case of destruction. That is why prevention is a top priority for ARTE Generali."

The Biennale will be hosted at Palazzo Corsini from September 21, 2022 to October 02.
